Can We Add Value To Coffee News?

    Coffee News 2

Image by be OH be via Flickr

    Allow me to recap:

You know that Coffee News is a small business opportunity allowing work from home moms, dads and others to publish a weekly one-page newspaper. This newspaper is distributed to local or community restaurants. The content consists of ‘news to amuse’ and takes less than 8 minutes to read. On the left, right, front and back page edges of the paper are 32 business-card sized ads where local businesses promote their business.

Currently more than 8 million people read this newspaper across the world every week. This is a significant publication with a reach stretching 52 countries.

    My questions:

Are we utilizing the true power of Coffee News?

Why not add value to this amazing publication?

    This is my suggestion:

    1. Create a reason for readers to subscribe to an online newsletter via a blog
    2. In addition to the paper version publish a shortened e-version with different news.
    3. Create Google Adwords like ads for the local advertisers and publish it on the edges of the e-newsletter.

    Just think about the opportunity:

    • We have a captive audience having fun getting a Coffee News newsletter weekly.
    • We have small business advertisers who get more exposure
    • Coffee News marketing agencies can add more value to their sales pack.

    What are the negatives?

Let me know what you think…..

    Newspapers Are Struggling

    The Washington Post

    Image via Wikipedia

During the last few days  Coffee News guys discussed the newspaper industry and the situation these big players are in due to the current financial situation and also due to the impact of electronic media.

Here’s the take from Mr. Buffett on Newspapers (Mr. Buffett has long held himself out as a newspaper man. As a child, one of his first jobs was delivering newspapers. An Omaha newspaper Berkshire owned, Sun Newspapers, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 based in part on a tip Mr. Buffett provided. One of Berkshire’s biggest investments in the 1970s was the Buffalo News, which it still owns).

CEOs Should Take Investors Along for the Ride. His view on the future of the newspaper industry is dismal. "For most
newspapers in the United States, we would not buy them at any price," he said. "They have the possibility of going to
    just unending losses."

As long as newspapers were essential to readers, they were essential to advertisers, he said. But news is now available in many other venues, he said.

Berkshire has a substantial investment in Washington Post Co. He said the company has a solid cable business, a good reason to hold on to it, but its newspaper business is in trouble.

Mr. Munger called newspapers’ woes "a national tragedy….These monopoly daily newspapers have been an important sinew to our civilization, they kept government more honest than they would otherwise be."

The question we need to ask; is how does this affect Coffee News?

Let’s get Bill Buckley the President Coffee News USA to explain how he sees the Coffee News given this backdrop:

We think it is important to make sure you do not believe we are linked in any way with what is happening in the other media.  Because, we are not.

The important thing to remember is Coffee News is totally different than any other media and as a niche marketing publication, we operate at one of the most affordable price points in advertising.

    • Our publishers work from home,
    • deliver to the distribution points free of charge for the restaurant owners.
    • We have no expensive staffs,
    • no office towers on the best downtown real estate, and
    • print one sheet of paper versus 28-96 sheets per copy.
    • We have about high net profit margin when operating at capacity.
    • No other media has this type of profitability.
    • Since we do not have staff reporters and layers of management, our costs can beat anyone in the market.

When times get tough, as when Coffee News started in 1988, the interest in lower cost, effective and affordable advertising mediums such as Coffee News tend to be higher.  This has been the case since last summer.  This implies these companies are switching out of radio, TV and newsprint to less costly local advertising.  We can see this here in our office by the large number of calls and emails we receive from businesses looking to advertise with you.  Many of you will recognize my emails as I forward them on to you.  We have never witnessed this kind of volume before.

Kindest regards, Bill Buckley, President Coffee News USA

Thanks Bill for the great insight.

Home Based Business: Are You Prepared?

A home based opportunity carries risks that you need to be prepared for. Being prepared are easier for some than others. For example if you come from a family of entrepreneurs then your awareness is very different to those of government or corporate workers.

Why Am I Sharing This Risky Ideas With You?

With all the changes, in South Africa and around the world, more and more people are taking the risk by starting their own small businesses. And taking this risk can be liberating for some and debilitating for others . Today I am talking to the others. It’s important that people, who consider a small business, be aware of the risks.

Why Did I Decide To Take A Risk?

As I grew up I was told to get something behind my name before I start a business. This is what I did and I got involved with corporate; the guys who pay you regularly but just enough to keep you quiet, they give you a pension and a company car. You think you have all the security. Unfortunately; while there you cannot see through the illusion.

There’s freedom in starting a small home based business and therefore taking risks.

Let’s consider a few risks when you start your own small business like Coffee News South Africa.

    • Lack of financial security: You will not be receiving a regular salary each month and your small business income will initially be smaller in comparison to what you received in your corporate job. This can change depending on your tenacity and drive. Today some of the largest and most profitable businesses were first small home based businesses. Therefore reward is always in direct proportion to risk.
    • Do You Have Enough Cash To Take You Through The Start Up? No business will ever be successful if you do not have the cash to survive the first couple of months. In order to do that you need to carefully consider your own cash flow forecast before you start.
    • You Are Solely Responsible For Your Own Time: This may seem like fun but when the going gets tuff you are on your own. The tuff times are directly proportional to the time (discipline) you spend working towards your goals. Discipline becomes your second name. Unfortunately many home based business operators become Mrs. Comfortable. And it’s easy to become comfortable; remember you are at home. We have noticed that friends pop in unannounced and stay because they can’t relate us running a business being at home.
    • Not Setting Goals Is The Downfall Of Many Home Based Businesses: Decide today if you have enough time, can create a schedule, set goals and stick to it no matter what. If you cannot then don’t even consider a home-based small business. However, if you are willing and able to set your goals and work towards them, then having control of your own time is an incredible advantage. Because you will have more freedom to do the things you would never have done working for your boss in the so called secure job.
    • Isolated From Your Social Network: Starting a small home based business requires you to be sociable but you are not forced to. This is the danger, even for seasoned pros. The real problem comes when you are shy or over conservative. Most of the small businesses I know depend on social interaction and you have no choice but to allot a significant portion of your time to socialise with contacts and to meet new (business) people. If you start spending more time behind the computer than out there your business will suffer.

As I said; this advice is not shared to discourage you from taking the small business plunge! Life is all about risks but you need to be aware of them. Being aware prepares you with knowledge allowing you to compare your own ability, personality and skills against the risk factors before you get involved.  It’s also important that you start a small business that has a proven record .

Unfortunately most people won’t take risks and then end up thinking of what may have been. I want you to consider the list and decide how you intend to overcome these obstacles in your path to freedom.

Like anything else, any work from home opportunity comes with pros and cons. All you need to do is decide what you really want in life; do you want to travel to work and face the boss daily or do you want to earn income working from home? Then focus on you goals because it will motivate and move you closer and closer to be successful at your home based business while enjoying the benefits and the liberation it brings.

    Regards

    Johan Horak

P.S. Here’s a list you can use to plan the start up of your home based business .

    Home Based Opportunity: South Africa

    Coffee News

    We promoted Coffee News as home based opportunity in South Africa. And we believed it is business you can run from  home. But just in this sentence you may note the difference;

    1. Home based business
    2. Business run from home

A lady who purchased Coffee News complained to us, after a few months, that Coffee News is not a home based business.

I am not sure how you define home based business but to me home based means that you work from home, you don’t have an office in town, etc. It does note mean that you can sit on your base the whole day. You have to get off your home base and meet people, help them and do things for them.

If you want to sit on your home base then Coffee News is not a small business opportunity you should ever consider. If you want to use your home as a base to work from  and not sit in an office across from the nasty boss then , yes, Coffee News can give you the opportunity to work from home.

    Have Fun
